Peppered moth simulation

Since we have started working on the unit of genetics and reproduction, we have neglected to talk about how speciation occurs. Why are there so many people with so many different traits? One of the more famous people to look at this question was Charles Darwin. He travelled the world aboard a sailing vessel studying birds and other wildlife in remote places such as the Galapagos Islands. He made some very interesting observations and wrote a book about his journey and why he thought there were so many different varieties of birds. Others have also come to similar conclusions as Darwin. Try the link below and see what kind of conclusions you can come up with:

Peppered Moths Simulation

Questions to think about:
  • Does the environment within which an organism live have an effect on the reproductive cycle of that organism?
  • Tigers in captivity have a hard time reproducing. Can you suggest a reason for this?
  • Two islands that are 150miles apart have parrots. On one island there are only green parrots and on the other island there are only brownish parrots. Can you suggest why that might be the case?
