***Atlantic Student Journalism Awards are available once again this year.  To enter, students are required to submit up to three samples of their journalistic work produced between March 30, 2009 and March 30, 2010. These stories can be in radio, television, print or other media. Students can submit any work, whether or not it’s been published. There is no fee to enter. Submissions must be postmarked by March 31st.  The winner will receive $1500 and the runner-up will receive $500.  Additionally, if the winner decides to attend STU, he or she would be eligible for an additional $1500 tuition credit.  For more information, please go to www.stu-sja.ca

***The Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation (NSGF) is pleased to announce its new 2010 Student Scholarship Essay Contest for graduating Nova Scotia high school students.  In an effort to mitigate this trend, the Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation invites graduates on the cusp of this critical risk period to craft a 1200-word essay that explores the potential risks of Internet gambling for youth.

The top three essayists will receive scholarships towards their postsecondary education: $2,000.00 for 1st place, $1,000.00 for 2nd place and $500.00 for 3rd place. For additional information please visit our website at

*** Finally, being a big mouth can pay off!  Annual Rant like Rick Contest open to any grade 11 or 12 student.  Memorial University wants you to Rant like Rick Mercer.  The contest is simple: shoot a rant, submit it, and if you can win the Rant like Rick Award, worth $10,000. *** 2010 Atlantic Canadian Marine Biodiversity Essay Contest.  Open to grade 12 students providing an opportunity for motivated students to learn about marine biodiversity in Canada and share what is learned in a creative and effective manner.  Up to three prizes of tuition credit are awarded and may be used towards a Science program at a contributing Atlantic Canadian University or College.  For more information about the contest and the schools involved in the award, please visit www.marinebiodiversity.ca.  Deadline for essays is March 26th, 2010 at 16:30 Atlantic Standard time.

*** The Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation (NSHRF) Decade Award - DEADLINE to apply - March 31st
This entrance award (one time only) is offered by Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation (NSHRF) to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Foundation. This award is being offered to a grade 12 student (who will be attending a Nova Scotia university or community college) in each of the nine school boards listed by the Nova Scotia Department of Education:
Applicants will be required to select a health topic, conduct interviews (in person, by phone, or online) with a Nova Scotian Researcher knowledgeable about their health topic and a Knowledge User and then write an essay about their health topic.
 
The essay may address the following:
  • The value of the health research conducted in Nova Scotia
  • The impact health research has on individuals, communities and or the province
  • The importance health research has or should have making decisions about health
  • A health issue in their community which has benefitted from or could benefit from health research
  • How they or their community can use health research to help improve the outcomes of this health issue
The NSHRF is directing high school students to, identify potential researchers to interview, by accessing the Directory of Nova Scotia Health Researchers located on our website www.nshrf.ca.
