Sinking Ice Cube : Density   & Buoyancy

 A Discrepant Event

Place two clear glasses on your desk.

One has been filled with  water and the other  with rubbing alcohol.

Ask students what will happen when I put an Ice cube in the glasses?

Why?

Place the ice cubes in the glasses.

What Happened ?

Why?

Although  water expands when it freezes it is still denser than alcohol.

Speaking of water expanding.  Here is a homework assignment:

You need to find an old person.

A long long time ago milk was delivered to people's doorsteps in glass bottles.

The milk was kept in the bottles with small round cardboard disks.

What happened on cold winter mornings if you didn't get your milk bottle inside fast enough?

Another Ice Cube demo

Place an  ice cube in a saucer.   lay a thread on top of the ice cube.  Sprinkle salt on the thread.  The salt will melt the ice and the ice cube should refreeze around the thread.
