Provide Descriptive Feedback

Rather than relying entirely on number grades, Stiggins suggests that providing descriptive feedback to students as they work through the unit can help them to reach the learning target.

There are many ways in which to communicate these ideas to the students.   Conferencing with students  can be done in fairly informal ways such as:

  • Providing comments to the students individually as you hand back assignments
  • Making general remarks at the beginning or end of the class that summarize some of the strengths and weaknesses that you have observed in the day's work
  • Providing written notes to the class as a whole outlining patterns of strengths and weaknesses that are common in the class
  • Providing written notes to an individual student (classroom example)
